What about supplements? The Great Birthday Surprise and the even greater Lavender Hill Guest House.

I  am a great believer that us Diabetics should take a Multi-vitamin supplement to assist our body in coping. Really we do not always eat the correct amount of vegetables and fruit and minerals and everything. All though eating the real thing is far better a little bit of supplementation will not hurt.

While looking in the local pharmacy for a good omega 3 supplement for my younger child to aid in concentration, I came across a supplement called Glucose Regulating & Diabetes formula. This was supposed to stimulate insulin production (my pancreas makes no insulin Zero, Zilch, Nada, Nil insulin so I was not expecting anything to happen there.)it also improves insulin sensitivity and reduces elevated blood glucose levels. It was all natural stuff so I thought lets try it out. It does warn you that it does enhance the effectiveness of your Diabetic Medication so you could go low.Okay I will be careful but I am a pessimist.

It only contains 3 active ingredients -

Pinitol - this should mimic insulin and hastens the transport of glucose from the blood stream to the cells. When I researched this there was some long scientific names and all I understood was something about a Bougainvillea. A few studies said it did not work.

Goats Rue Extract - Wish I knew about this when I was breast feeding or rather attempting to breast feed as this also aids lactating mothers. For the Diabetic it is supposed to enhance the sensitivity of insulin receptors, making them more responsive to insulin. My mind was telling me that if this helps I will decrease my insulin levels which in turn will help me shed the kilos. It also has some other beneficial effects in connection with Worms, snakebites and fevers.

Gymnema Sylvestre Herbal extract - This should slow the transport of carbohydrates from the intestines to the blood. Here I am thinking that if you have a high GI meal you can lower the GI to medium by adding a Low GI food to the meal, same sort of thing happening with taking this supplement.

I have only been taking this for a week and although I have not seen any huge differences I am willing to carry on with it and reassess buying a new bottle after this one is finished in a months time.

I would definitely say that it should have bigger impacts on Type 2 diabetics as they can stimulate insulin production and would definitely be a must take supplement if you have been diagnosed as pre- diabetic.

I have not yet been able to reduce the insulin dose but as they say Rome was not built in a day.

The only thing I am against is the statement on it saying to help treat both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics. The important word here is help, a type 1 diabetic can not live with out Insulin and no herbal remedy is going to cure us. After a month if I have not decreased my insulin levels while exercising and eating the same as before. I will call it as not helping me. We all are different it might help you immensely or not at all. Worth a try, is all I can say.

Plus I will be worm free and better of if I get bitten by a snake.

The Surprise

Kulula had a sale on recently and I decided to buy a ticket and surprise my Sister who lives in Knysna for her birthday.

Boy was she surprised. It took a lot of planning and "telling of lies" but we did it. I arrived later than would have been best on the Friday, the day of her birthday, my Dad had to pick me up from the airport in George about an hour away from the birthday dinner venue.

My step mum expertly lied and said that my Dad had gone to help a friend with his leaking roof and he would meet them at the restaurant later.

That sounds good if you don't know my Dad. I don't mean to be horrible but my Dad would be one of the last persons I would call if I had a leaking roof. It is like me saying to someone I have gone to donate blood at SANBS and I will see you just now.

My sister fell for it though and only got slightly worried that Dad had set her up with a blind date when she heard my Step Mum book the reservation for 4 people instead of 3.

The weather sucked (hence the possible leaking roof) but we had a great time.

We celebrated the birthday and had a good old sisterly weekend together, it would have been even better if our other sister had also flown in but I suppose the UK is a bit far to come just for a weekend.

My sister runs an awesome Bed and Breakfast in Knysna called "Lavender Hill" Guest House. If anyone is ever looking for accommodation on the Garden route this is the place to go.

On booking .com her place gets an average of 9/10 from 11 reviews with headings to comments like (I quote):

"Worth to come back"
"Good"
"Excellent"
"Exceptional"
"Wonderful"

Here is the link to her website, I am sure she will treat you like royalty as she seems to do with all her guests.

It really is a part of paradise to go visit and I am sure she can whip up a mean Diabetic Freindly breakfast.

Bye for now , until I type one again. (Get the pun. )

To Tattoo or not to Tattoo?

It is everywhere on Pinterest ,on all Diabetes Blogs and websites.

Not breaking news about a Diabetic cure or any medical advise.

We are all talking about Diabetic Tattoos.

Before you even look at ideas and rush to your nearest Tattoo parlor ,you have to consider these points:

  • You are going to be basically wounding yourself, as we take longer to heal you must have and keep your blood sugars at their best in order to heal nicely.
  • Your choice in Tattoo artists should not be " I saw this guy with an awesome tatt and I asked him who inked him." It should be a thorough investigation of the sanitary conditions and the utmost cleanliness of the place.(A Diabetic and an infected tattoo, I think not.)
  • Make sure your HBA1C is excellent before we begin.
  • Check with your Dr first , remember they can be quite fuddy duddy at times so make sure that they have valid medical reasons for their no answer. (Hmm I once had a GP with his wedding band tattooed to his finger , should find him again and get his tattoo artists details.)
  • Follow the after care instructions given to you by the tattoo artist exactly.
  • Also need one who can spell D-I-A-B-E-T-I-C.
After you have checked all these pointers and more and you are absolutely certain you want this to happen, you can start looking at design ideas. I was thinking what would happen if by any remote chance in my lifetime we had a cure , what do all these people do? Go back and add Was a to the tattoo or  have a line but through it, or add Cured to it. There are so many ideas that I am sure these creative people will come up with something.

These are some of my ideas for my tattoo on my wrist. (Please comment and let me know what one you would choose.) I don't want it too elaborate or hard to understand cause I intend it to be used if there is ever an emergency.

Maybe change type one for Diabetic or add Diabetic under the syringe.

The Humming bird is the UK Diabetes Symbol - Need to include the Diabetic somewhere.

Then I go side tracked :(

Now I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to needles (Ha Ha) not joking. So I thought that since my sister is an Asthmatic and also wears no medical bracelet I would convince her to come with me and get an Asthmatic one done. These are obviously not so popular, none of the millions of pictures like those for diabetics. This is what I found on Pinterest, the lung one is awesome but might take a good couple of sessions and more than a wrist.

Another one was the same as the pump one above but said "It ain't easy being wheezy" Really. You have to live with that statement on your arm forever. Of course to be of use to medical personal you need to add Asthmatic somewhere on these.

It is so hard to decide!

I still want it done but it is not just a get drunk one night and walk into the 24 hour parlor by the Casino.

Bye for now.

Kim

PS - Don't you just hate keeping surprises, I love receiving them but keeping one is really hard. More about this next time I type.

A bit of this and a bit of that.

I decided today that I would just share some wonderful Diabetes sites and other things I have found while surfing the web.

First up is the very talented Kerri who writes the blog "Six until me", She also wrote an e-book called "Diabetes terms of endearment." I have posted the link to the whole book but here are my favorites:

  • BS-Brain - Blood Sugar brain , the fog all day after a low blood sugar
  • Carbage - Collective Carb count of an item of food. eg "How much carbage is in that donut"
  • Insulint- Having a bad attitude while also being a diabetic.

And did you know that I am a PWD no not a "Public Works Department " or  "Print Working Directory command"but "Person with Diabetes".

Some Diabetes humor

Some Diabetic Pick Up Lines

"How about we go back to my place, I now a way to make your blood sugar drop."

"My low blood sugar isn't the only thing that makes me sweat, You are HOT!"

What I have found in the shops.

Recently I have found a new range of sugar free cool-drinks in Woolworths , they have Sugar Free Creme Soda, Sugar Free Grapeade, Sugar Free Gingerbeer and Sugar Free Passionade. This must be great for young diabetics that now can enjoy similar drinks to their friends. (Oh between you and me I love them as well, for 30 years I have been waiting to drink a whole glass of Fanta Grape again and this version is everything I expected.)  Thanks Woolworths. PS Woolworths have had a special on these recently at R30.00 for 3 x 2L bottles so it is also as cheap as chips.

Scary diabetic stuff

There are people with Diabulimia - This is a Diabetic with a condition where by they don't inject too much insulin so they can remain skinny like most type 1's are when they are first diagnosed because of Uncontrolled diabetes. Read the article, I was totally shocked when I heard about this, this kind of thinking is crazy and scary.

That's all for now, hope some of these put a smile on your face.

Bye.
